When William Jacob first surveyed the Barossa Region in 1839, he and his brother John took up land in the Hundred of Moorooroo. Moorooroo is derived from an aboriginal word meaning ‘meeting of two waters'. The two waters involved were the North Para River and creek, which fed into it. The creek was later renamed Jacob's Creek after William Jacob and the Jacob brothers' small cottages still stand, overlooking Jacob's Creek. His first vintage was in 1850, and he continued to make wine in his small ironstone winery beside Jacob's Creek until his death at the age of 84. Today the traditions and quality set by the brothers is still jealously guarded and have led them to become Australias most sucessful wine producer.

The philosophy is simple, concentrate on the vineyards and the wines will look after themsleves - well along with a bit of winemaking know how. Their innovative spirit is not just restricted to the vineyards and they have been pioneers in recent years of cultural initiatives in the region with among the more unusual projects being their "music to drink wine by" CD. They also have commissioned local sculptors to express what wine means to them in various installations around Tuscany. If they pay this much attention to their local environment, imagine what their wines are like?!

Francoise Chauvenet was the mother of Francois who established his business in 1853 and decided to name the place after his favourite mother. 150 years on, the wines are still being produced to the same high standard that he set and the range has expanded to include most of the major wines of the Burgundy region.

This is thanks to the likes of Lenz Moser, who dreamt of bringing his beloved 'GV' to a wider audience. Everyone who's tasted his GV has signed up for the fan club on the spot. Given these wines' remarkable ability to pair with every food under the sun from seafood to spice, there is absolutely no reason they shouldn't go to the ball.

The Thomas Mitchell wines are named after one of Australia's first explorers, Major Thomas Mitchell who crossed the river at what is now called Mitchellstown, on his 900 kilometre journey from Sydney to Melbourne. It took another 100 or so years for winegrowing to begin in the region kick started by another Aussie pioneer, Colin Preece. Preece a veteran vineyard prospector found an old cattle grazing estate called, Blackwood and from there it all began

Veuve Clicquot's famous Yellow Label is one of the best loved and best selling Champagnes in the UK, famed for its rich, biscuity aromas and smooth, full-bodied taste.
 
The House of Clicquot owes its fame to the founder's remarkable and audacious daughter-in-law, Nicole Barbe Clicquot. Widowed in 1805, she boldly developed the business both technically and commercially, coining the motto "only one quality“ the finestâ€� which the company retains to this day. Cellar master Jacques Peters and his team work with more than 50 different wines to reach the level of perfection that this champagne demands.

Veuve Delaroy is a soft, delicate Champagne that offers cracking value for money. Lots of zingy citrus and nutty almond notes on both the nose and palate.
